Winter advice for your feet

Winter is upon us again or did it ever leave? Keeping your feet warm in the winter months is important to everyone.

Especially:

  • diabetes sufferers
  • the elderly
  • people with poor circulation
  • Raynauds
  • those with limited mobility

Wash and dry your feet every day and apply emollients to prevent dry cracked skin

Socks should be thicker but not so thick that your footwear is tight. Can you still wriggle your toes? Cotton or wool socks will keep the feet warmer than synthetic materials and also help to wick away perspiration from the skin

Footwear should be fit for the conditions underfoot. Non slip soles with water repellent properties are good. Should you need to wear high heels wear them to the taxi and back again.

Should your feet be exposed to the cold for a prolonged period of time you must never try and warm them up too quickly. Place feet in a bowl of  warm-water, avoid hot water and allow the tissue to return to a normal temperature slowly. Never try and warm your feet on a radiator or in front of a fire. Chilblains can be extremely painful. Numerous topical creams are available in a pharmacy. Should the chilblains become broken it is best to seek the advice of your podiatrist immediately.

Stay warm and safe
